Have you ever wished you could travel back in time and go back to a place in history, that from where you sit now, seems dreamy and simple? I'm sure you have. I know I have.
Without realizing it I had the chance to travel (or drive) back to a place I used to spend so much of my time. A place in my history. A place I called home. In doing so I learned a major lesson: I didn't appreciate this place then as much as I do now.
In spending 4 hours at the busy little Cottage Garden Cafe; greeting people, pouring waters and cleaning tables to help the waitresses I quickly remembered the simplicity of the repetition that buzzes through the porch and dining room. Table numbers, coffee refills and an endless need for this and that and the other. I do realize it's more peaceful and more enjoyable today because it's not my job now. I appreciate the porch, the teapot collection, one of a kind local artwork and these hardworking people that from my perspective have their shit (pardon my French) together.
One thing I will always remember is how the food is so delicious and fresh. The whole place smells of toasted bread, steamy coffee and bacon! The omelets stuffed full of fresh chopped vegetables are giant! I was so excited to find they had Greek Quiche on special this weekend, which quickly became my breakfast. Oh and I can't fail to mention the most amazing whip cream topped smoothies you will ever taste in your life.
As I was standing at a table with a brightly flowered table cloth I looked out the window at Mr. R unloading fresh baked bread to replenish the quickly dwindling supply in the kitchen. How amazing it would be to be THEE baker of a small town that supplies the groceries and restaurants with everyone's favorite cinnamon raisin and English muffin bread? Simply amazing.
The blond haired waitresses are all so sweet and seem so much more on key than I ever was. They have a great group of people making the gears go around. It made me so happy to see that the lady that first taught me the ins and outs of a restaurant has a great team.
I don't care if my opinion is bias on this one, I'll say it anyways. The Cottage Garden Cafe is the best place in Pentwater, Michigan for breakfast.
